The transparent bodies which displayed the magneto-optical effect he called ‘dimagnetics’, an analogy with dielectrics. Faraday had made two discoveries. First, that somehow light and magnetism were connected and, second, that glass has been affected by magnetism. The latter was of greater relevance to his search for universal magnetism, and he soon turned his attention to showing that the glass was directly susceptible to magnetic force, failing to find any effect on 6 October. Undeterred, he obtained, from the shipping merchant Charles Enderby, half an anchor link. This he made into a giant horseshoe electro-magnet wound with nearly 522 feet of wire and weighing 238 pounds. This became operational on 3 November, and the following day, when he hung a piece of heavy glass between its poles, he observed, when he turned on the magnet, the glass aligned equatorially between the poles:
